As plumbers, we see it all, from ruinous slab leaks to crusty shower heads, and we always tend to get the same questions. Here are some of the most popular questions we hear, and the answers to them.
Your water heater is likely either a traditional tank-style or a modern tankless unit, and both have different reasons for not producing enough hot water.
If you have a tank-style heater you may be using more hot water than it has the capacity for. Sometimes even if you bought a 50-gallon tank that provided enough hot water for years you may find it runs out sooner lately. This is because:
The tank experiences buildup and loses volume over the years from sediment in the water.
A tank-style water heater is only expected to last 10-12 years on average, so it may be time to replace it if you’re running out of hot water all the time.
If your tankless water heater is not producing enough hot water you definitely have an issue with the heating element. Either it isn’t staying on while you use hot water or it’s not heating the water enough for you to tell it’s hot, and in both cases, you’ll need to call a serviceman to come repair or replace it. Fortunately, most tankless units have a 20-year warranty, so it should be covered.
What Causes Low Water Pressure?
When you take a shower or wash your hands you expect a certain amount of pressure to help blast away dirt and grime. It also helps when preparing a pot of water for cooking or drinking if you aren’t waiting an extra five minutes to fill the container with water. So what could be happening when your water just isn’t flowing like it used to? It could be several things, but the most common culprits are:
- Faulty Pressure Reducing Valves on the incoming water line just outside your house near the meter
- Crusted pipes that restrict flow
If you don’t have a Pressure Reducing Valve you should consider the possibility that there is a serious issue with your pipes. In homes built within the last 20-30 years, you shouldn’t have any major encrustation, so it’s most likely a leak somewhere in your lines. Call a plumber to find it and fix it as soon as possible!
