Home Holiday Tips
It’s that time of year again, when every family member you’ve missed (or avoided) comes over to celebrate the holidays at your home, and with that comes the special anxiety of not knowing whether your home’s plumbing can handle the additional… well, load. Fear not! As our gift to you this holiday season we have some quick tips to ensure you don’t have to answer any embarrassing questions like “Why does your sink smell so bad?”, or “Why do I have to flush three times?”, and we’ll even save you some money! This series of blogs will give you some helpful holiday plumbing tips to save money and keep your stress levels to a minimum the hectic holiday season.
Deodorize your drains with any of the following methods:
1. Use a citrus fruit like lemon or orange or lime in your garbage disposal to clear odors at the entrance to your drain. Take the fruit and zest (get just the very top layer) the peel into the garbage disposal, then turn it on with running water for a few moments. You can repeat this daily if needed during your family’s stay to keep the odor at bay and waft some citrus scent into the air around your kitchen sink. Be sure not to put too much peel in at once though, and don’t put whole fruit or seeds into your disposal unless you are in the market to buy a brand new garbage disposal unit for a few hundred dollars.
2. For other drains like bathroom sinks that don’t have a grinder (hopefully, anyways) you can use a baking soda and vinegar combination to clear out most sources of odor from a little deeper in your drain and also help improve the performance of your drain slightly by eroding some of the buildup that occurs naturally.
3. You can also purchase products such as “Plink!” which have scented options for both garbage disposals and regular drains, and which are safe for use in any home.
