Holiday Tips Part 3

Holiday Tips for Your Home

There’s something to be said for enjoying a long, hot shower after a long, cold night in the winter months. But when you, your spouse, your kids, your parents, your in-laws, your brother or sister and their kids and their spouse, and the dog all need showers you really aren’t going to enjoy that Christmas present from the water and gas companies in the form of a massive bill. So what, if anything, can you do to save yourself from even more expenses during the holidays without giving up those great showers?

Well, that leads us into our final holiday tip:

Get some high efficiency shower heads.

Nowadays you can find all kinds of shower heads that pump up the pressure without using any additional water, so you can get that firehose blast of hot water without necessarily dumping hundreds of gallons of water down the drain. The way it works is by using something called an Aerator to mix the water with air from around the showerhead and increase the volume of the mixture coming out of the shower nozzles, which increases the pressure leaving the nozzles by adding to the pressure coming from the plumbing in the wall. A good unit from a brand like Speakman or Niagara can provide you with the same pressure as a traditional unit despite using as little as 1.5 gallons per minute. That means a ten minute shower only uses 15 gallons of water!

You can pick up an ultra-high-efficiency shower head for less than $20, and the savings it provides during family visits more than make up for that expense. Of course, when you get a new shower head the best course of action is to hire a plumber to install it properly so you don’t have any leaks or risk damaging the existing plumbing in your shower by overtightening it. Our Orange County plumbers are always happy to help with any plumbing needs.
